On December 23, 2015 Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Bishop Erwin Kräutler, C.PP.S. as bishop of the Xingu prelature.  Kräutler submitted his resignation on July 8, 2014 upon reaching the age of 75.  He was born on July 12, 1939 in Koblach, Austria and has served as the Bishop of the Xingu since September 2, 1981 when he succeeded his uncle, Bishop Eric Kräutler, C.PP.S.  The Xingu Prelature has 330,000 Catholics and is served by 30 priests and 67 religious sisters and brothers.  The Brazilian Vicariate of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood serve in the Xingu Prelature.

Kräutler has worked tirelessly on behalf of the rights of the indigenous people of Brazil and the protection of the environment in the Amazon.  He has also served in leadership positions in the Brazilian Episcopal Conference.  Because of his ardent defense of the poor and marginalized he has received numerous awards throughout his tenure as bishop.  Most recently, Bishop Kräutler was the homilist for the eucharistic celebration at the Basilica of St. John Lateran on the occasion of the Bicentennial of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood.

The Holy Father has appointed Rev. Joao Muniz Alves, OFM, as the new bishop of Xingu.  The bishop-elect was born in 1961 in Carema, Brazil and has served in various pastoral roles throughout his priesthood.  Bishop-elect Muniz Alves will be ordained to the episcopacy on March 5, 2016 and will be installed as the Bishop of Xingu on April 3, 2016 in Altimira.  Bishop Kräutler will serve as the principle celebrant of the ordination liturgy.  Bishop Kräutler will serve as the Apostolic Administrator until Bishop-elect Muniz Alves is installed.
