The Companions (lay associates) of Lake Mary, Fla., in the United States, launched a service project to help celebrate the C.PP.S. bicentennial.

At a monthly gathering last spring, Companions placed the following items in one-gallon plastic bags: bottled water, crackers, Vienna sausage, apple sauce, single serve canned fruit, raisins and plastic eating utensils along with a list of resources and telephone numbers for the homeless, hungry individual and a Bible verse on a prayer card.

Companions took bags to keep in their cars to have them readily available when they came upon these individuals standing at an intersection, begging for food.

All reported at their next gathering that the food bags had been distributed and that they would continue with the project.

The hours spent on the project were included toward the 1,000 hours of community service in honor of the C.PP.S. bicentennial, which was a goal of the Cincinnati Province during this bicentennial year. The province has far exceeded that goal; to date, 3,871 hours of community service have been recorded.
