From February 6th through 10th the Latin American Formation Committee met in Guatemala for its annual meeting. Formators Frs. Dionicio Alberca (Peru), Sebastián Argueta (Guatemala), Arcelino Magalhaes (Brazil), Francisco del Valle (Mexico), Magnus Tegete (Colombia), Antonio Baus (Chile), Juan Carlos Barajas (Joint Special Formation Program Director at Guatemala) and Armando Rivas (Director of the Theologate in Colombia) were present at the meeting. These annual meetings have their origin in 2008, when the Major Superiors of the CPPS Region saw the need for collaboration in our formation programs. It all started with a Theologate program in Bogotá, Colombia, with CPPS candidates from Guatemala, Brazil and Peru. Also a full one year joint Special Formation Program was designed according to the needs of the Region and of the CPPS. This program was in Chile for the first year and then it was transferred to Guatemala (2007). Fr. Juan Carlos Barajas, on loan from Chile, has been the Director of the Program in Guatemala for two terms.
The agenda for the Latin American Formation Committee meeting was to evaluate the past Latin American Special Formation Program; to give an approval to the Statute for the Latin American Formation Committee; to approve and recommend to Major Superiors the Formation Program for the Theologate at Bogotá; to elect the new board of directors for the Committee and finally to provide some names to be considered for future Directors of Special Formation Program and the Theologate.
The meeting ended with a day off at the outskirts of Guatemala City, visiting a resort area that provided thermal waters coming directly from a volcano nearby. The experience of jumping into a pool with very hot water and then, after few minutes, switching to a very cold one, was invigorating to say the least… and a living prove of having a good heart that was able to take it!
Once again we deeply thank the Central American Mission and particularly to the CPPS in Guatemala who graciously hosted us during the week.
