Fr. Daniel C. Raible, C.PP.S., 96, died in the infirmary of St. Charles Center, Carthagena, Ohio, Thursday, June 12, 2014.
He was born in McKeesport, Pa., near Pittsburgh, on October 31, 1917, to Daniel P. and Agnes (Holtz) Raible. He entered the Society in 1931 and was ordained on May 9, 1943. Last year, he celebrated the 70th anniversary of his ordination.
After his ordination, Fr. Raible served as an assistant pastor at St. Edward Church in Cleveland; as a chaplain at St. Agnes Convent in Fond du Lac, Wisc.; as an assistant pastor at St. JohnChurch in RibLake, Wisc.; and as a chaplain at SacredHeartHospital in Tomahawk, Wisc. He taught at Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Ind., from 1946-48, then served in parishes in Kentucky and Indiana, later returning to teaching at Saint Joseph’s. In 1953, he went to Brunnerdale, the Society’s high school seminary in Canton, Ohio, where he served as instructor and spiritual director, then magister spiritus of brothers. In 1972, he became a chaplain at Timken Mercy Hospital in Canton and later at the Vincentian Home in Pittsburgh, Pa. Fr. Raible retired to St. CharlesCenter in 1993.
Fr. Raible was a quiet, private person who was also very loving and compassionate to his family and to the people he served through his ministry. His sister, Sr. Agnes Raible, CDP, said that he had a sharp intellect and a love of reading that stayed with him until his death. He left home at an early age to attend Brunnerdale, but was able to return to Pittsburgh later in life to minister at the Vincentian Home, where his mother was a resident. They spent time together every day, and those were very happy years for him and for his whole family, his sister remarked.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Tuesday, June 17, at St. Charles Center, with Fr. Larry Hemmelgarn, C.PP.S., presiding. Burial followed in the Community cemetery.
