The members of the Dayton District of the Cincinnati Province held a Day of Mercy on March 15, as part of their celebration of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. The idea was a variation of the 24 Hours for the Lord, which Pope Francis had encouraged all to celebrate. St. Joseph Church in downtown Dayton was open from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m.. The Blessed Sacrament was exposed for public adoration, and priests were available all day long to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Adoration and Reconciliation were suspended at noon for the regularly scheduled daily Mass. Precious Blood brothers and sisters were also available throughout the day to sit with participants who wanted to discuss at greater length a particular issue in their spiritual life.
Every hour of the day saw a steady flow of penitents. Even the early morning hours saw men and women coming out to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation before heading off to work. Lisa Johnson, who lives in a suburb of Dayton but traveled to St. Joseph to participate in the Day of Mercy, said “Precious Blood priests are amazing confessors. They take their time with each person. You can feel Christ’s presence through them.” Throughout the day the faithful were present to pray before the Eucharistic Lord.
The organizers feel that it was a big success. Another Day of Mercy is planned for July 1, the Solemnity of the Precious Blood. On that day, Precious Blood Church in Dayton will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and priests, brothers & sisters will again be available to minister to the people.
