
Brother Umberto was called by the Lord on May 30, 2020, at 6.00 pm, while the Church celebrated the first vespers of the Solemnity of Pentecost. At the time of his death, he was in the Albano community where he lived since October 13, 2018.
He was born in Benevento on January 8, 1930 to Bartolomeo and Felicia De Luca. Joined the Congregation in Benevento in 1952. He spent time in formation in Rimini, Bari and San Felice di Giano. It was definitively incorporated on January 6, 1957. From that same year, until 1968, he served in the Italian communities of: La Spezia, Albano, Ferrara, Vallecorsa and Laveno.
In 1968 he was transferred to Tanzania, two years after the foundation of the Mission in Africa. From 1968 to 1973 he worked in the community of Manyoni, the foundation house of the Mission, and from 1973 to 1978 he worked in Itigi. Returning to Italy in 1979, and until 2017, he lived for 38 years in the community of Cesena where he held the ministry of manager of the “mission center”, where he mainly devoted himself to the collection of basic goods to be sent to Tanzania.
The funeral mass was celebrated on the morning of June 1, presided over by the Moderator General Don Emanuele Lupi who also delivered the homily. It was concelebrated by Don Terenzio Pastore, Provincial of the Italian Province and by about twenty confreres who despite the emergency of the coronavirus wanted to be present at the funeral rite. After the celebration, Brother Umberto was buried in the municipal cemetery of Albano, in the community tomb. Brother Umberto was the last living coadjutor brother of the Italian Province.
